Mogote Campground (Rio Grande National Forest in Colorado) is the first campground to the entrance of the Conejos River Canyon, which is over 40 miles long. Mogote has 41 campsites and two group sites. There is an upper and lower campground which deliver different charms to the campers. The upper campground is a little more open and provides some drive thrus for the bigger rigs. It is also the one that most birders choose - Flycatchers, Tanagers, Bluebirds, Grosbeaks and Nuthatches are a few you might see. Deer are seen almost every day. Ponderosas are the predominant tree in the upper campground.
This is not camp Yuppy! It’s not a park but a beautiful wild campground. It provides a vast amount of privacy at most campsites. The lower campground has 9 sites on the river for the fisherman. Again, privacy is the theme down there. Mogote has the best water in the Canyon and is tested every 3 weeks. Seven faucets make the water gathering easy. There is also two large group sites for those family reunions which hold up to 100 people. Come and camp in relative privacy!
Reservations can be made at recreation.gov. Group sites can currently be reserved for the 2020 summer, while single sites will become available six months prior to the first day you plan to reserve.
Directions and a map can be found on Mogote's page.
