Comales Campground is on the north side of New Mexico State Road 518, 7 miles east of Penasco. There are 13 sites. The road in the campground is gravel and there are several loops to allow RVs to turn around, though a few of the sites are dead ends.
Prices:
$12 per night
$5 per extra vehicle
$6 for day use
Reservations: First-come, first-served.
Directions: From Taos, NM, drive 18 miles east on US 518. From Penasco, drive 5 miles north on New Mexico 75 and 2 miles east on New Mexico 518. The campground will be on the left.
Amenities: Vault toilets. No drinking water or garbage service - if you pack it in, please pack it out. Trash can be dropped off at Agua Piedra Campground, approximately 5 miles east on Highway 518.
Open dates: Opens one week before Memorial Day weekend (on Friday). Closes on Labor Day.
Nearby: ATVs must be on a trailer in the campground, but La Junta Canyon (about 5 miles east) offers plenty of motorized recreation opportunities. The Rio Pueblo runs just across the highway from Comales and offers excellent trout fishing. There are several hiking trails in the area.
